Close to fifteen thousand vehicle owners have not turned up for their annual fitness test over the past five years.
Land Transport Authority CEO, Naisa Tuionaceva said that this is a worry as these cars that do not go for their fitness tests are a threat to public safety and are deemed as unregistered.
He stressed that under Section 49 of the Land Transport Act 1998 and owners are liable to a penalty of up to $300.
According to LTA, a certain percentage of these vehicles could be in some form of wreck or derelict condition and it is believed that majority of the vehicles are still operating illegally avoiding authorities around the Fiji Roads.
Tuinaceva is calling on all vehicle owners to remember their annual tests to ensure all cars on the roads are safe.
The road death toll stands at 39 compared to 29 last year.
