15 Months For Thief
These were the words of Magistrate Amani Rokotinaviti as he sentenced 28 year old Daniel Ajnesh Karan to 15 months imprisonment, who earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of larceny.
The Police Prosecutor told the court that on 16th August, Karan whilst employed at a factory at Wailada, stole $10,000 cash from the company director, who had lived in his boat after his house burnt down earlier this year.
Karan stole the cash while cleaning the boat and was seen by a security officer.
In mitigation, he told the court that he had worked for Lee for one and half years and earned $90 dollars a week and was remorseful and drunk during the incident.
He had earlier informed the court that he will pay the amount however he could not keep his word.
However, Magistrate Rokotinaviti said that Karan had admitted to a previous conviction of similar nature and had shown no sincere attempt to repay $10,000 and should be punished and sentenced him to 15 months imprisonment.
