The United Nations projections for Fiji indicate that in 2025 the elderly would account for 13% of the total population.
Social Welfare Minister Dr Jiko Luveni who said that proportion of older people is increasing rapidly and immediate actions needs to be taken to tackle the social and economic implications of the aging trend.
Dr Luveni said population in Fiji is living longer and that the 2007 census revealed that the proportion of population 60 years and older accounted for 8% of the total population.

Meanwhile, with the recent ground breaking ceremony of the first ever Senior citizens park in Thurston Garden, the Fiji Pensioners Association has applauded the move of the construction of a park for the senior citizens in the country.
President Hari Raj Naicker said considering the contributions made towards nation building by the senior citizens, the park is long overdue.
