$110,000 was used last year to tackle diseases like typhoid, dengue and leptospirosis.

Interim Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma said this was the amount spent on identifying the health problems and fighting the outbreak in diseases.

However, Sharma said this year they tried their best after the January floods to identify the places which needed the most assistance and found that dengue was prominent in Labasa Town, Batinikama, Siberia, Vaturekuka and Bulileka while leptospirosis was evident in areas in Bua.

He added the Ministry, apart from sending their health inspectors and divisional teams to these areas, will just try to educate people that they need to look after their environment, keep the grass short, ensure that drainage is good, take preventative measures and ensure that drinking water is boiled at all times.
