Scientists claim that the government's Tilapia breeding program has led to the disappearance of 11 native species from Fiji's waterways.
Senior Program Officer, Wetlands International Oceania Aaron Jenkins told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat Program that after conducting research at 20 catchments in Fiji, he has found that the tilapia species have managed to find their way into the natural habitat of other species which are now disappearing.
Permanent Secretary for Fisheries Commander Viliame Naupoto said the program has provided rural communities with both an income and a reliable, cheap source of protein for more than two decades.
Commander Naupoto said the government will investigate the concerns raised.
