109 cane farmers were today compensated by the Yaqara Pastoral Company Limited after damage done to the cane crops by cattle in the area.

Serious concerns were raised by the Chairman of Yaqara Pastoral Company Simon Cole this morning as he highlighted a number of incidents of people cutting their fence and stealing the cattle.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the matter about the damage to the crops was raised through a text message sent to the Prime Minister last year.

He says investigations were carried out and proper assessment of damages to the crops was done by FSC.

Sayed-Khaiyum says the compensation ranges from $100 to $11,000.

He also highlighted that some of the claims were exaggerated and 5 farmers will not get compensated as they do not have any crops.

The Attorney General also says that some of the damage has also been done by the wild cattle in the area.

Sayed-Khaiyum also called on the farmers to work with Yaqara Pastoral.

When contacted by Fijivillage, Acting Police Commissioner Brigadier Sitiveni Qiliho said he will look into the matter and talk to his senior officers.
