Top guns Mataiasi Savou of Grammar, Banuve Tabakaucoro of Marist and Nikotimo Radiva of Sila Cental came through their heats without breaking a sweat.
The three ran in separate heats and Savou and Radiva both clocked 11.08 seconds while Tabakaucoro went under 10.80 seconds and it looks like the Senior boys hundred meter record of 10.74 seconds will tumble this afternoon.
Marist Brothers Banuve Tabakaucoro said he has brought his A game and it will be hard to beat him today.
In the Senior girls 100 meter heats, the battle is between ACS and Grammar after Seleima Baleivesi and Mere Seniloli of ACS won their respective heats and will take on Paulini Korowaqa of Suva Grammar.
There was an upset in the 200 meters Senior boys heats where one of the favorites Sila Centrals Nikotimo Radiva was beaten at the tape by Nadi Muslim student Philip Togotogorua.
Isoa Me of Lelean Memorial school also lost in the 200m senior boys heats and was beaten by Epeli Kavarua of Nadi Muslim College.
Fiji Athletics Coach Bola Tafou said at this stage we can only guess who will take out the title as the top schools have failed to win as many medals on day one as before.
Tafou also predicts that sprints finals could determine the winner.
The Suva Grammar Girls are putting up a close challenge for defending champions Adi Cakobau School as they continue to win their heats.
Middle distance sprint Queen and 2009 Best Female Athlete, Makitalena Lokolokobuka who is competing in the 400m finished her heats comfortably.
However, grammar's medal hopeful and defending champion in the Senior boys 400m Eroni Cagi did not perform up to expectations and lost his spot to Nadi College's Epeli Kavoro.
Meanwhile, medals continue to scatter in the field events with Yat Sen Secondary recording their first gold medal in the Junior Boys Shot put from Fredrick Kado.
The silver medal went to Central College student Nabure Tanua while Semisi Sigatabua of Ratu Navula Secondary School took home the Bronze medal.
Ana Naimasi helped Lomary Secondary School etched its name in the history books as it took out the gold medal in the first ever Intermediate girls triple jump event.
The event which was introduced this year, saw Namasi bag Gold with a jump of 10.60m.
A major battle also looms in the Junior girls 100 meters final later today where Adi Cakobau=s Elenoa Sailosi is expected to go head to head with Sisilia Seavula from Saint Joseph Secondary School.
Looking at earlier results, Mereseini Naidau of Nadarivatu Secondary School took first place beating defending 2009 champion and school mate Salote Naiula as well as Adi Cakobau's Akesa Drotini.
Silver went to Makitalena Nagonevulavula of Waidina Secondary School with the Bronze going to Oripa Adicoka of Vunisea Secondary School.
Meanwhile Urupeni Senibulu of Marist Brothers kick started their campaign to end their three year drought by claiming the schools first gold medal in the Junior Boys 1500 meters finals
The silver medal going to Inia Sili of Shree Guru-nanak Khalsa School, with the Bronze going to Zubair Dean of Suva Muslim college.
In the Intermediate Boys 1500m finals Natabua High School's Muni Chetty grabbed the Gold Medal, with silver going to Jack Niubalavu of Kadavu Provincial Secondary and Bronze going to Peni Keteiwai of Nadarivatu Secondary School.
In the Senior Boys 1500m finals, Lomary Secondary's Varasiko Toge bagged the Gold Medal. Silver went to Nadarivatu's Jone Draunileba and Bronze to Koto Tavei of Nadroga Arya College.

In the Boys Division: Marist Brothers lead with 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medal. Second is Natabua with one gold and one silver and Ratu Navula is third with 1 gold and 2 Bronze while fourth tied are Saint Johns College, Lomary Secondary, Wainibuka Secondary, Holy Family Secondary and Labasa Sangam with 1 Gold and 1 Bronze.
In the Girls Division, 9 time winners and defending champions, Adi Cakobau School lead with 2 Gold and 2 Silver while tied at second spot are Khalsa College and, Napuka Secondary with 2 gold medal each.
