A $1,000 spot fine is what people can face if they are caught selling cigarettes to minors.

This is the message from the Tobacco Control Unit, who said they continue to monitor the sale of cigarettes to those 18 years and under as the number of children found smoking continues to rise on a daily basis, and this is a worrying trend.

An official from the Unit said this includes the sale of individual rolls which they have noted has been the easiest and cheapest way students are able to get their hands on cigarettes.

With 65 students caught smoking last month during a joint operation between the LTA and the Unit, they have stepped up the monitoring of the sale of single rolls, and those caught will be fined on the spot.

Officials will also be out during the two day Coca Cola Games this Friday and Saturday.
