Over 1000 babies were born at the CWM Hospital Maternity ward in April lone and the baby boom is taking its toll on the Health Ministry's resources as the maternity wards around the country are packed out with pregnant mothers.
Health Ministry Spokesperson Iliesa Tora confirmed to Fijivillage news that for the first time in Fiji, 2,500 babies have been delivered at the CWM Hospital alone over the last three months.
He said one reason for this is that women are not utilizing the sub divisional hospitals.
Tora said they have had to bring beds from other health centers in the Central division and have set up makeshift beds at the maternity ward at CWM to cater for the huge demand.
Meanwhile, Fijivillage news received reports from visitors to the maternity ward at CWM who claimed that some mothers are being made to use mattresses spread out on the floors as there are not enough beds.
Tora said they will have to look into this before making any comments.
