10-15 Years To Change Voters Mindset
After several questions were raised from those present at the public forum in Tailevu today on why there is a need to change the communal voting system, Verata chief Ratu Meli Vesikula said it will take time before changes can be implemented.
Vesikula said in the next three elections it is likely that voters will still vote along racial lines.
Sawakasa district rep Isoa Tamani also raised concerns that in the Fijian interpretation of the draft Charter, it said that names of schools which have titles based on race will be abolished and when they questioned the charter team who have visited them twice, the answer was the same, that this will be done through the draft charter.
However Adi Finau Tabakaucoro today highlighted that there is an error in the translation because the English version says that institutional names that denote racial affiliations will have to be phased out and it does not mean changing the school’s name.
Close to 150 people were present at the NCBBF meeting at Tailevu hotel in Korovou, which is the biggest turnout in the Central division so far.
