The Public Service Commission will continue to try and reduce the number of civil servants and the chairman stressed it is not about downsizing, but rightsizing.
After years of discussions and studies on the size of the civil service, Josefa Serulagilagi said they will ensure that targets are met.
Meanwhile, Serulagilagi confirmed that the Finance Ministry is still trying to confirm the amount of money which would have to be paid out to the 2,301 civil servants who retired yesterday in terms of outstanding leave and other payments.
Out of this 2,000 plus, 192 will be retained through a one year contract.
However, this does not include the number of retiring teachers, nurses, doctors and civil servants in five other Ministries, Finance, National Planning, Tourism, Public Enterprise, Information and Works and Transport.
