The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China says as far as the Embassy knows, the owner of Yue Lai Hotel, Zhao Fugang is a Fijian national, and they have suggested to fijivillage News to consult the Fijian government about his activities and operation in Fiji.

Following the 60 Minutes Australia and Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project reports alleging that Australian intelligence reports have suggested that Fugang is one of the leaders of organized crime, the Chinese Embassy says the suspicion of the relation between the Chinese government and the Chinese community in Fiji is entirely groundless.

The Embassy says it expresses regret about that.

While the issue of the 77 Chinese nationals taken back by Chinese Police from Fiji without any court or legal processes in 2017 resurfaces, the Chinese government says it attaches great importance to and is fully committed to protecting the safety and lawful rights and interest of overseas Chinese nationals.

It says they always ask overseas Chinese nationals to comply with local laws and regulations, and not to engage in any illegal activities.

The Chinese Embassy says China always believes that different civilizations should respect and learn from each other with an open mind and countries should strive for harmonious coexistence, win-win cooperation and peaceful development.

It says by uniting overseas Chinese nationals including students, the Chinese side helps give full play to their role as a bridge linking China with the rest of the world to promote people-to-people exchange and nurture friendship.

It says its work is transparent, above-board and beyond reproach.

The Chinese Embassy adds that law enforcement and police cooperation between China and Fiji is professional, open and transparent.

It says as early as in 2011, the two sides already signed the Memorandum Of Understanding between China’s Ministry of Public Security and Fiji’s Ministry of Defence, National Security and Policing, which has significantly promoted the exchanges and cooperation of law enforcement and police cooperation between the two countries.

The Embassy says under the MOU, China has provided assistance and capacity training for Fijian Police.

It says Chinese and Fijian Police have worked together for joint investigations on specific transnational crimes.
